Sustainable, efficient, and people-centred public transport – that’s the mission guiding eBRT2030!
Over the past few months, the project has been out and about, joining public transport events across Europe to keep the conversation going on how electric Bus Rapid Transit (e-BRT) can help cities move toward greener and smarter urban mobility.
So before we head to our next stop, let’s take a moment to look back at some of the highlights from recent events!
Mobility Innovation Tour in Bergamo, Italy | 23 May 2025
Bergamo hosted the second stop of the Mobility Innovation Tour, organised by ATB Mobilità at the ATB museum. The conference “Public transport in the fast lane: the Bus Rapid Transit solution for cities” brought together under one roof industry experts and local authorities to explore the potential of electric BRT systems.
Opening the event, Flavio Grazian, eBRT2030 Project Coordinator, delivered a keynote highlighting the evolving role of BRT in Europe’s mobility transition. He pointed to the growing number of systems in development across the continent, nearly 50, and stressed the importance of making better use of public investments.
“Public transport typically spends a third of its time on duty, a third stopped in traffic and a third at a stop. We must try to improve the distribution of these third parties: with BRT systems, dedicated lanes and traffic light priorities we can improve the use of assets. They are public assets for which public money has been invested.” Watch the flash interview conducted with Flavio Grazian here.
The Bergamo e-BRT system, presented by Liliana Donato (General Manager, ATB Mobilità) and Mauro Tomaselli (Fleet Management, ATB Servizi), is set to become an example of electric BRT in Italy. With nearly 30km of planned route, most of it in dedicated lanes, and fully electric operation, the system aims to carry 4 million passengers a year, cut over 900 tons of CO₂, and get people across the city quickly. Currently 40% of the work is complete and launched planned for July 2026.
The e-BRT system is fully integrated into Bergamo’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and the wider “Path of Innovation” territorial strategy, making it a core piece of the city’s transition to cleaner, smarter transport by integrating electric innovation, solar energy, and predictive maintenance.
The event confirmed Bergamo’s position as a strong example of how BRT systems can be developed through European collaboration and innovative solutions.
Just days earlier, eBRT2030 held its fourth User Group meeting in Rimini. You can read the outcomes from that meeting here.
ITS European Congress in Seville, Spain | 19 to 21 May 2025
At the ITS European Congress in Seville, eBRT2030 participated at the special session “Impact of Fleet Electrification on Urban Mobility” (SIS 28), alongside projects like ZEV-UP and SUM. The session explored how electric buses, ferries, and shared vehicles can support cleaner, more efficient cities, especially when combined with digital tools, planning strategies, and supportive policy.
eBRT2030 was featured as a European best practice, with a focus on its demonstration sites and their diverse approaches to BRT. In a related technical paper session, Anna Antonakopoulou (ICCS) presented the Athens demo site and its hybrid charging model, combining trolleybus catenary and depot charging, along with predictive maintenance powered by IoT to ensure operational reliability.
Stay connected with eBRT2030
The past few months have been busy ones for the eBRT2030 consortium — full of hard work, but also steady progress as the project continues to unfold. Consortium partners have been actively participating in events across Europe, and… we’re not slowing down!
The message of electric Bus Rapid Transit is one we’re proud to keep sharing, so stay tuned with eBRT2030, as the road ahead runs in dedicated lanes and on electric buses!
