New factsheet explores the green transition of Gothenburg

Electrified buses have become a common sight in the streets of Gothenburg, a city on the western
coast of Sweden and a Mission city for the 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030.

Over 300 electric buses operate in Gothenburg, but just a decade ago there were little to none. Gothenburg’s city buses are almost all electric. By 2030, the aim is for all city buses in the region to
be 100% electric – that’s more ambitious than the national goal.

This has all come from strategic planning and partnerships. The Region Västra Götaland (PTA) and Västtrafik, the public transport operator have been working closely with the municipalities of the Gothenburg area and other stakeholders to implement a mutually established vision which includes two BRT-systems.

One is a long-term goal to improve current express busses which serve the outer city and neighboring municipalities. This will be high-capacity buses with BRT stations along the national routes surrounding the city. This will enable rapid transportation around the city as well as to/from the greater metropolitan area.

The second is an to improve an existing BRT-like system to and from the city which will be upgraded to even better BRT-qualities within the next few years.

Although the city is not involved in eBRT2030, members of the project team travelled to Gothenburg to learn more about the city’s transformation and how change is possible at such a rapid pace.
