eBRT Demo in Spotlight! Barcelona

Barcelona is advancing toward a fully electric and high-performance urban bus system through a new eBRT demonstration focused on upgrading the H12 line. The objective is to transform one of the city’s busiest routes into an urban BRT fully operated by articulated electric buses. Charging will take place both at terminals through opportunity charging and at depots overnight, supported by smart energy management systems that optimise consumption and ensure vehicle availability even during peak demand periods. Alongside full electrification, this demo site introduces operational measures to improve service regularity, including traffic light priority and advanced control strategies designed to maintain stable headways and prevent bus bunching.

The Barcelona demo is led by TMB with the support of FAC, IDI, IRIZAR, CRM, UPC and NEMI. Beyond infrastructure and operations, the Barcelona demo places a strong emphasis on customer experience and long-term scalability. Predictive real time and multi day demand forecasting models are being deployed to better match supply with passenger needs, improving reliability and comfort across the corridor. The initiative is closely aligned with the strategic objectives of the city’s Urban Mobility Plan 2025 to 2030, which seeks to shift a significant share of daily journeys from private vehicles to public transport. Key targets include near full electric operation of the H12 line, reduced emissions and full replicability across the network; the Barcelona eBRT demo provides a grand blueprint for scaling electric BRT solutions throughout the city and beyond!
