On 31 March, Izmir, Turkey was host to the first complementary training programme under the eBRT2030 project, a pioneering European-funded initiative focused on shaping the future of sustainable urban mobility. This inaugural training brought together 40 participants from across the public transportation sector. This first training session marked an important milestone in the project’s efforts to complement innovation with practical application of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems. The training forms part of a broader strategy to share knowledge and ensure that the latest advancements in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are effectively transferred to public transport professionals and stakeholders.

This training programme was led by UITP’s BRT Trainer Guido Bruggeman, who is also a member of the eBRT2030 project Advisory Board. The programme dealt with the design of BRT systems from the feasibility study and planning to the operations and potential integration of electric buses.  Throughout the training sessions, participants explored key operational aspects of eBRT systems, with special emphasis on operations management, charging infrastructure, batteries and the integration of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). A central focus was placed on Traffic Light Priority, highlighting its critical role in improving service reliability, reducing travel times, and enhancing overall efficiency. The training combined practical insights with strategic perspectives, equipping attendees with tools to implement and optimise BRT solutions in their own specific contexts.

This first training in Izmir sets the stage for a series of capacity-building activities planned throughout the year. As part of the eBRT2030 project’s commitment to knowledge dissemination, additional sessions will continue to engage stakeholders and share project outcomes. The next training is scheduled to take place in Barcelona, one of the demonstration cities of the eBRT2030 project, from 19 to 21 May 2026, further expanding the initiative’s reach and impact across Europe’s urban mobility landscape. Please be sure to continue to check the eBRT2030 website for updates on future BRT training and contact Flavio or the UITP Academy if you are interested in attending.
